SREC Registration for Virginia & Maryland Solar Owners

SREC Registration: Get Your Solar System Set Up

SREC registration may allow eligible solar production to generate renewable energy certificates once applicable metering and reporting requirements are met.

Before You Start

First, Make Sure the SRECs Belong to You.

Before you register, check who owns the SREC rights attached to your solar system.

Start with your solar agreement. It tells you how your system is owned and who holds the SREC rights.

Own Your System?

If you purchased or financed your system and retained the SREC rights, you can register eligible production and manage the certificates your system generates.

Lease Your System?

With a Convert Solar lease, SREC rights stay with the system owner.

Have Your System Information Ready

Registration may require information about your solar system, equipment, installation, utility connection, and production.

SREC Registration in Virginia & Maryland

Ready? Start With Your State.

The basic idea is the same. Your system produces eligible solar electricity, that production is tracked, and renewable energy certificates can be created. The registration path depends on where your system is located.

SREC Application

Apply Through RECmint / Sun Tribe Trading

RECmint, formerly Sun Tribe Trading, provides the online application for eligible solar owners who want to register and manage SRECs.

Virginia and Maryland both recognize renewable attributes from solar production. The steps for getting your system registered are different.

What You're Registering

1,000 kWh of Solar Production = 1 SREC.

Your panels produce electricity. Eligible production can also generate solar renewable energy certificates (SRECs). One SREC represents the renewable attributes associated with 1 megawatt-hour, or 1,000 kWh, of qualifying solar electricity.

Think of them separately: electricity powers your home.

Solar renewable energy certificates represent the renewable attributes associated with that production.

SRECs are separate from utility Net Metering credits. Net Metering deals with eligible electricity sent to the grid and the utility credits associated with it. SRECs or solar renewable energy credits represent the renewable attributes of qualifying solar generation.

How SREC Registration Works in Virginia and Maryland

Your System Produces. Your Production Gets Tracked. SRECs Follow.

Register your system, track eligible production, then choose how to manage or sell your SRECs.

Step 01

Register your system.

Complete the registration or certification process that applies where your system is located.

01

Step 02

Track eligible production.

Your qualifying solar production is recorded so renewable energy certificates can be created.

02

Step 03

Manage or sell your certificates.

Once certificates are issued, they can be managed or sold according to the applicable market and the arrangement you choose.

03

SREC values move with the market, so the amount your certificates may be worth can change over time. Your panels produce the energy. Registration connects that production to the SREC market.

SREC Questions

SREC Registration Questions.

One SREC represents 1,000 kWh of eligible solar production. A system producing 10,000 kWh of qualifying electricity could therefore generate 10 SRECs from that production.

SREC values change with market conditions, certificate type, location, supply and demand, and how the certificates are sold. They should be treated as a market-based value rather than a fixed payment.

It depends on your ownership agreement. If you purchased or financed your Convert Solar system and retained the SREC rights, those rights stay with you. Under a Convert Solar lease, SREC rights stay with the system owner.

No. Net Metering credits relate to eligible electricity your solar system sends to the grid. Solar renewable energy certificates represent the renewable attributes associated with qualifying solar production.
